Attending the 18th annual Sequim Lavender Festival with my family this year was everything I had hoped for and more. Before even reaching the festival, we came upon Sunshine Lavender Farm right off the side of Highway 101. The adorable Red Barn that houses their gift shop was too much to pass up, and of course, who could resist the endless neat rows of lavender plants in different stages of growth. Friendly smiles and the unmistakable aroma of fresh lavender greeted us as we walked through the neatly kept farm. There were several vendors selling amazing works of art and jewelry. We especially enjoyed the lavender ice cream and live music.
When we finally decided to leave and get the heart of the festival, we were already feeling the calming effects of being surrounded by so much lavender. When we reached the heart of the festival, I made my way to meet Mary Jendrucko, Executive Director of the Sequim Lavender Festival and owner of Sequim Lavender Company. Mary is an entrepreneur, inventor, and savvy business person. She created and holds a patent for a lavender-filled pet bandanna under the DogdotCalm trademark. This lady knows her lavender! Mary and her husband Paul were incredibly busy managing the constant flow of visitors to their booth so we didn’t have much time to talk but I’m hoping we get the chance now that the festival has passed.
We perused the more than 150 vendor booths, each one filled with interesting and creative items, and enjoyed a wide variety of live music and good food. There were too many farms for us to visit in just two days, but each one we did visit was unique and charming in its own way.
One very happy surprise from being immersed in all that lavender was the lasting calming effect on my entire family. The four-hour drive home was quiet and peaceful, not the usual with two kids in the back seat. I’m sure many of you can appreciate anything that keeps kids mellow on road trips! I was even feeling sleepy into the next day. I truly understand the meaning of lavender haze now!
