Spring Flowers Inspire this Botanical Body Lotion
I love Spring. It is my second favorite season after Autumn. In addition to the heady scent of flowers, new grass and sunshine, I have vivid memories of my first real experience of Spring. I left the virtually season-less Los Angeles for the snowy winters in Spokane, Washington when I went off to college. I still remember the first day I saw crocus flowers pushing up through the snow outside the English Department building. I was smitten with Spring.
Every year I like to bring that first blush of Spring into my house with blooming bulbs and this year I wanted to try to bring that feeling and amazing aroma to my body lotion. So here’s a lovely botanical body lotion you can scent as you like with anything from an EO Blend like Flower Power with Ylang Ylang II Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil, Lemon Peel Essential Oil or our Women’s Balance Blend of Clary Sage, Jasmine, Bulgarian Rose, Ylang Ylang II, Neroli, Geranium, and Lavender.
Ingredients for Botanical Body Lotion
- 1 cup carrier oil of choice. Consider Hemp Seed Oil or Grapeseed Oil, Marula Oil or Baobab Oil
- White Beeswax (not vegan) or Candelilla Wax (vegan option) in the oil to bring it to 1¼ cups
- ½ cup water
- ⅛ teaspoon Borax to help preserve and emulsify
- Essential Oils of choice. I like Lavender, Rose, Litsea and Blood Orange or any of our Essential Oil Blends.
The Process
- Pour your oil and wax in a heat proof container, such as a glass measuring cup that will handle high heat. Be sure to wear goggles and keep pot holders handy.
- Put glass container into a microwave on high for one minute and check consistency. You will do this once or twice more in 1 minute intervals to get the oil and wax mixture very hot, almost to boiling. If any wax remains hard, simply stir it and it will melt. Use a stainless steel spoon to stir.
- In a separate container, heat the water to boiling.
- Add the borax and stir. Note: The water and borax mixture needs to be kept very hot. Use oven mitts when handling.
- When both mixtures are hot and melted, slowly pour a small amount of the water into the oil. Keep stirring in the water until it’s all blended in. You should have a creamy dreamy consistency. Use an immersion blending to keep the mixture from separating and blend about 5 minutes.
- When it’s blended and creamy, add a few drops of your Essential Oil using a clean pipette. Stir well and smell. Add more if desired. Remember to start small and add more. You can always add more. Then transfer to fun jars or bottles. I like the small mason jars out in the market right now as well as airless pumps. Be creative with your packaging and labeling.
