It’s getting hot outside!
It’s only May and we’re already experiencing record temperatures across the country. While the sunny days are great for all-day outdoor activities or an overnight jaunt to the beach, they’re not so pleasant for your bulk natural products back at home. Inside each box that ships from Essential Wholesale, you’ll find a handy “care & feeding” card to help you care for products once they hit your doorstep. But until they arrive, you’ll need to think about preservation during the shipping process, too. Below you’ll find tips for summer care of your bulk natural products.
Shipping Options to Beat the Summer Heat
The first rule of thumb when shipping in the summer is to figure out the best way to get your products to you. Some items may need to be shipped overnight or by a refrigerated carrier to maintain their consistency. For example, if your product has a lot of coconut oil in it, it will melt at 77F. Paying for overnight or refrigerated shipping may sound like an unnecessary expense, but it may end up saving you time and money in the long run. Shipping your heat or cold-sensitive products in a temperature-controlled environment will allow you to proceed with filling or mixing with minimal reconstitution.
Once you know how your products will arrive, do some extra prep to make sure they land at your door in good order. You’ll want to remove your product from the front door step or any outdoor environment as soon as possible. If you are going to be out of town, your local delivery service may be able to delay shipment or arrange an alternative pickup upon your request to the carrier. TIP: Fedex will take your package to a nearby Fedex Office for pickup.
Upon Arrival – 7 Steps to Working with Natural Products
- Immediately open your products and stir until homogenized.
- Dry off the inside lid of your container
- Let your products sit to resolve any separation or viscosity issues.
Summer – Place in an air conditioned or cool environment.
Winter – Place in a room temperature environment. - Pour off your products into resale or storage containers.
- Keep at room temperature (68° – 75° F)
- Store your products in tightly sealed containers with minimum “headspace”.
- Protect your products from moisture, extreme temperatures, and direct UV light.
- Pour off Essential Oils into dark glass bottles.
You’ll find that by following these directions most finished products will usually balance their composition.
