Natural Hair Products
Every type and texture of hair usually needs its own beauty regimen, and you’ll probably have figured out your own, through trial and error, over your lifetime. To be more inclusive of curlier and more textured hair, we’ve collected our Natural Hair Collection, specifically formulated and chosen to suit a greater variety of needs. This blog lists those products, but also provides tips from users with curly hair on how to care for different types of hair with these specific items. Let us know which you’d like to try or give us input from your own routine! Natural hair or treated are all welcome!
Keep an eye out: Essential continues to work on our hair care range. In 2019 you’ll see hair butters and hair custards as well as hair spray, and fabulous new sulfate-free moisturizing shampoos!
You’ll likely identify with one of the hair types above—this line of products was designed mostly for 3A and higher but some products will work great on all types of hair, for example the Mango Deep Conditioner.
Depending on the level of curl in your hair, you may only wash it occasionally with shampoo, and with that you may co-wash (combine shampoo and conditioner in one step) which is gentler on hair. In general, sulfate-free and products with low surfactants are better at caring for textured hair, and it also may need extra love post-shower. Some products are designed for scalp care too, especially some oils or sprays.
Across the board, the staff here has loved the Curl Enhancing Conditioner for almost all hair types, so if you’re not sure which product to try we recommend that one. Let’s go through the options:
Cleaning
-Essential Exotic Hair & Body Wash (Sulfate Free)
Use as a normal shampoo and body wash—it smells wonderful and rich and also benefits from the conditioning effects of Meadowfoam Seed Oil.
-Vital Skin Face & Body Cleanser (Sulfate Free)
This is a great cleanser but stronger than is needed for everyday use if you have curly hair—we recommend using it after swimming in the ocean or pool, after a hard workout, or to get rid of product buildup. For everyday use, it is more ideal people with hair in the 1 to 2C range.
-Herbal Aloe & Shea Hair & Body Wash (Sulfate Free)
Use as a gentle shampoo and body wash. Calendula, comfrey, and kelp make this a nutrient-rich and gentle option.
-Fine Hair & Body Powder (previously called Baby Dusting Powder)
Although this sprayable powder has many uses, it’s on this list because it’s a great dry shampoo. Spray it near the scalp and lightly muss hair with fingers to disperse it. Alternatively, use it as a body dusting powder or deodorizing shoe powder.
Scalp Conditioning
A combination of carefully chosen essential oils and antioxidant-rich carrier oils make this Tune Up Blend ideal for scalp massage. It has a calming woodsy-citrus scent and is great on skin, too.
-Essential Exotic Face & Body Oil
This oil has many wonderful ingredients meant to soothe the scalp after it’s been pulled on from styling, including Cranberry Seed Oil, Marula Oil, and Baobab Oil. It has an enlivening scent that’s sweet and citrusy.
Use the Cooling Leg Spray to soothe and cool tired scalps pulled tight from styling. Peppermint and Spearmint Essential Oils help calm skin during styling, while Organic Aloe Leaf Juice also hydrates the scalp.
Hydrating
This conditioner is deeply nourishing to hair of all types, and the mango scent is a nice burst of the tropics wherever you are. Natural hair and straight hair alike respond well to this. Another staff favorite and particularly good for those with hair in the 4A to 4C range.
This is the winner amongst our staff reviews, especially for people with 3A to 3C hair types. Softening, gentle, conditioning, and mostly unscented, you can also add your own essential oils to enhance this winner.
This conditioner doubles as an excellent co-wash, able to gently clean or mix in with the shampoo of your choice.
We consider this an excellent leave-on moisturizer you can spray on hair after a shower. It’s mild and mostly unscented, and great for sensitive skin too.
This versatile and hydrating spray has many uses, but it works well as a leave-in conditioner. It has some favorite certified organic ingredients, including Jojoba, Coconut Oil, and Aloe Leaf Juice. Spray on and lightly rub in, and feel free to add your own scent.
-Affirming Hair & Body Oil (USDA Certified Organic)
This oil helps hydrate and keep hair softer and sleeker with Organic Jojoba and Rosehip Seed Oil. It absorbs quickly and has a delicate rosemary scent that doesn’t overwhelm. All natural hair types.
