Myrrh is one of those ingredients that is usually talked about only once a year around Christmas. But long before it was a precious gift offered to the newborn baby Jesus it was used by ancient Egyptians in skincare and embalming rituals, by the Chinese for good health, and even by ancient Greeks on the battlefield. Its benefits go far beyond just smelling great. It’s really a great ingredient choice for any time of the year!
While we can’t go into full detail (due to FDA regulation) about all of the amazing benefits myrrh provides to the skin, we can give you the composition of myrrh. The organic and inorganic composition of the myrrh gum resin has been investigated thoroughly using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The elements that were found to be present in large amounts include calcium, magnesium, aluminum, phosphorus, chlorine, chromium, bromine and scandium. The important organic constituents identified in the myrrh ethanolic extract include limonene, curzerene, germacrene B, isocericenine, myrcenol, beta selinene, and spathulenol. All of these combine for truly amazing skin benefits that have been scientifically proven and also proven over centuries of use to be beneficial.
In addition to being a great skincare ingredient, it’s also great for aromatherapy benefits! We love this oil in the Celestial Essential Oil Blend. It adds just the right amount of myrrh fragrance to make this blend really smooth and rich. Check out this great recipe using Myrrh and the Celestial Oil Blend.
