Non-GMO, USDA-certified organic, locally grown, sustainable. These familiar certifications and designations signal to consumers that the food product we’re looking at was produced without conventional pesticides, using ecologically viable farming practices, and sold through an intentional, local market. These and other standards, like safety and food traceability, are the ideas behind the “Farm-to-Table” movement—a familiar concept here in Portland, Oregon.
But why limit ourselves to just eating the food? Can the purity of these fresh, organic ingredients stand out in our skincare products, too? Many eco-conscious beauty mavens believe the answer to that question is a resounding yes—and think it’s about time consumers scrutinize the products they put on their skin as closely as they do the foods they eat.
Enter “Farm-to-Face,” the movement toward food-beauty that is all about consciously feeding your skin the same way you’d consciously feed your body—by providing it nutrient and vitamin-dense fruits & vegetables, and using fresh, local & sustainable ingredients wherever possible. Farm-to-Face is a growing trend in the beauty industry that seeks to create skin-nourishing products from fresh, plant-based, and local ingredients—many of which you can cultivate in your home garden or find at your local farmer’s market.
The Farm-to-Face movement also makes at-home skincare formulation quick, fun, and easy. Plus, who doesn’t love a good DIY project? Follow the links to try out some of our favorite Farm-to-Face (and Hair) Masque recipes yourself:
Papaya flesh contains a proteolytic enzyme called papain, and unripe papaya contains the highest amount of papain. This enzyme is what makes papaya such an amazing ingredient in skincare, especially in a masque. Because you leave the masque on your skin (usually 5-15 minutes) the enzyme has time to perform its magic. Papain acts as a powerful exfoliant and moisturizer helping skin feel velvety soft, refreshed, and glowing.
This fruit powder masque is fresh every time. It’s skin softening and pampering and best of all: it’s easy to make and take with you when you travel.
Revitalizing and delicious peaches are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and this Peach Honey Masque will leave skin soft, supple and glowing.
Bananas are rich in potassium to strengthen hair, minimize breakage and restore its natural elasticity. Bananas also contain natural oils and about 75% water, so they’re ultra-moisturizing. In addition- the fruit is packed with vitamin A, B6, C & E, as well as zinc and iron.
